New York Legislature Passes Medical Aid in Dying Legislation After 10-Year Effort

New York—with endorsements from two bar associations—was inching toward becoming the 12th U.S. state to allow for physician-assisted deaths for the terminally ill, backers said on Monday in Albany.

 

The Medical Aid in Dying Act, S138/A136, passed in the Senate on Monday, as it had in the Assembly on April 29.

Hoylman-Sigal credited state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, D-Staten Island, for her lobbying efforts, especially since the island is considered the most conservative corner of New York City. Hoylman-Sigal noted that as “a gay Jew from Manhattan,” he had combined efforts with “a Catholic girl from Staten Island.”
